Crop Production

Land is our greatest asset since the most fertile soils are found exactly on Zemgale plain where the soil fertility exceeds 60 points, in some places even reaching 82 points, which is almost 50% higher than in other rural areas of the country. Thanks to its rich soil, Zemgale has long been referred to as the granary of Latvia.

Today AS “Agrofirma Tērvete” farms 3200 ha of land in the southern part of Zemgale plain. Use of land for growing crops is based on the principle of change of crops and crop rotation, which allows better exploitation of the potential fertility of the soil, and its restoration, ensuring environmentally friendly production.

The crop production sector has a very important role for the company’s business. Its task is to provide other sectors of the company’s business with commodities:

• High-quality forage and grass silage for cattle and horses
• High-quality malted barley for the brewery
• Corn silage for the biogas plant
• About 90% of what is yielded from crop production is used for the company’s self-consumption.

Professional management and the generosity of the land give good results, but with the fast development of the business and growing production volumes in other business sectors of the company, the demand for raw materials is increasing.

The role of cooperation and collaboration is growing. In order to use land and technical resources more rationally, the company cooperates with the companies SIA “Agrofirma Liepas” and SIA “Kalnāji”. All the companies together farm more than 8000 ha of arable land.
